Camera Basics:
Q: I keep
hearing this word 3 Chip, what does that mean?
A: Traditionally, consumer cameras had one (CCD)
chip, and broadcast cameras had 3 Chips. With 3 Chip cameras, each
chip takes a primary color resulting in higher resolution and more
vivid colors.

It's
all about filming with intimacy… How do I get the best
3 chip digital image possible, keep all the professional features I'm
used to, still use my pro audio equipment (XLR inputs), and not intimidate
every guest with a big TV camera and loose their natural demeanor...?
It was a tough decision but it came down to
the "look" of
the picture, and the number of truly professional features. I, like
numerous documentarians & networks all over the world (including
CNN), chose the PD-150.
Sony DSR-PD150 3 Chip DVCAM (w/every package)
The
PD-150’s newly designed Hyper-Had Chips generate 380,000 pixels
per chip… the same as JVC500U but without the contrasty picture.
It's got two XLR inputs, LCD monitor, as well as a B&W viewfinder
for critical focusing (no other camera above has this). Normally cameras
this small can't shoot in low light very well, but that is the PD-150’s
strength. The colors are breathtaking… the camera just makes
people look good! It of course shoots on DV which is transferred via “Firewire" to
our workstation. The PD150 is used extensively for reality shows, documentaries
and even features. If you watch TV, you are already VERY familiar with
it’s picture quality, which is why I chose it.

HD (High Definition)
In the spring of 2005 Sony released the HVR-ZU1, which at a glance
sounds like the PD-150 on steroids. But it’s much more… The
HVR-ZU1 has a shaper lens, totally different Chips (1.1 million pixel
vs. 380,000) and records in MPEG-2.
